When was the first time you thought about light?
Was it the experience of sunshine – or moonlight?
Or, perhaps the flashlight you hid in your bed sheets or held under your chin to spook your friends?
And when was the first time you studied light and were amazed by its properties? It was probably with a prism – or aiming the mirror on a microscope.
The physics of light is why it works. The science of light and reflection is why we can see. The biology of our bodies is designed around the physics, and the science, and the essence of light.
But, is lighting design just the science of how light works and how our brain perceives light? That depends. Is a painting just the application of oils to a canvas?
Lighting Design is both an art and a science. Expertise in both enables a designer to fully integrate lighting into a project.
Every lighting designer is unique, and their designs are signature – like the designs of famous architects and artists. These masters use their knowledge of the science of their craft as the background on which they build art.
When light becomes art – environments are more pleasant, life is more productive, and the soul is enriched.
